BOXED WARNING: Fetal Toxicity - "When pregnancy is detected, discontinue captopril tablets as soon as possible," since drugs acting on the renin-angiotensin system "can cause injury and death to the developing fetus." Indicated for "treatment of hypertension," alone or with other agents; "treatment of congestive heart failure usually in combination with diuretics and digitalis"; to "improve survival following myocardial infarction" in clinically stable patients with left ventricular dysfunction; and "treatment of diabetic nephropathy (proteinuria greater than 500 mg/day)" in type I insulin-dependent diabetics with retinopathy.
