Uses and warnings

BOXED WARNING: "Fluoroquinolones, including LEVAQUIN, are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in all ages," a risk "further increased in older patients usually over 60 years of age, in patients taking corticosteroid drugs, and in patients with kidney, heart or lung transplants." The boxed warning also covers peripheral neuropathy that may be irreversible, CNS effects including seizures and psychiatric disturbances, and worsening of myasthenia gravis. Contraindicated in patients with "known hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or other quinolone antibacterials." Other major warnings include hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reactions, hepatotoxicity, QT prolongation/torsade de pointes, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, and disturbances of blood glucose.

Levofloxacin tablets are indicated in adults (18 years and older) for infections including nosocomial and community-acquired pneumonia, "acute bacterial sinusitis," "acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis," complicated and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, "chronic bacterial prostatitis," complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, "acute pyelonephritis," and "inhalational anthrax, post-exposure."
