Uses and warnings

No boxed warning. Contraindicated in patients who "develop hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir." Key warnings: "Renal failure, in some cases resulting in death, has been observed with acyclovir therapy," particularly with inadequate hydration or in patients with underlying renal impairment; and "Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura/hemolytic uremic syndrome (TTP/HUS), which has resulted in death, has occurred in immunocompromised patients receiving acyclovir therapy."

Acyclovir tablets are indicated for: - Acute treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) - Treatment of initial episodes and management of recurrent episodes of genital herpes - Treatment of chickenpox (varicella). The label notes effectiveness is greatest when therapy is started early after symptom onset.
