BOXED WARNING: "Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death... GEODON is not approved for the treatment of patients with Dementia-Related Psychosis." Contraindications include "a known history of QT prolongation," recent acute myocardial infarction, uncompensated heart failure, and concomitant use with other QT-prolonging drugs. Other major warnings cover QT interval prolongation and risk of Torsade de Pointes, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, and metabolic changes including hyperglycemia and diabetes risk.
Indicated for treatment of schizophrenia in adults; acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder; maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder as an adjunct to lithium or valproate; and, in the intramuscular formulation, acute agitation in patients with schizophrenia.
