Uses and warnings

BOXED WARNING emphasizes three major risks: - Concomitant use with opioids may result in "profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death" - Benzodiazepines carry risks of "abuse, misuse, and addiction, which can lead to overdose or death" - Continued use "may lead to clinically significant physical dependence," with abrupt discontinuation potentially precipitating "acute withdrawal reactions, which can be life-threatening" Additional warnings address neonatal sedation/withdrawal if used late in pregnancy, and caution against simultaneous alcohol or CNS depressant use.

Diazepam tablets treat "anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety." Additional uses include symptomatic relief during acute alcohol withdrawal, adjunctive treatment for skeletal muscle spasm, and adjunctive use in convulsive disorders. The label notes that effectiveness beyond 4 months has not been established through systematic clinical studies.
