BOXED WARNING: "Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death," with mortality roughly 1.6 to 1.7 times that of placebo; "chlorpromazine hydrochloride is not approved" for this population. Additional key warnings cover tardive dyskinesia (potentially irreversible), neuroleptic malignant syndrome, increased risk of falls and fractures, encephalopathic syndrome when combined with lithium, and use in pregnancy.
Indicated for management of manifestations of psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia; control of nausea and vomiting; relief of preoperative restlessness and apprehension; adjunctive treatment of tetanus; management of acute intermittent porphyria; control of the manic type of manic-depressive illness; relief of intractable hiccups; and, in children 1-12 years, for "combativeness and/or explosive hyperexcitable behavior."
