Uses and warnings

No boxed warning. Contraindications: "sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, and overt cardiac failure," and known hypersensitivity. Key warnings: beta-blockers can precipitate cardiac failure because "sympathetic stimulation is necessary in supporting circulatory function"; abrupt cessation has caused "severe exacerbation of angina and occurrence of myocardial infarction and ventricular arrhythmias"; "PATIENTS WITH BRONCHOSPASTIC DISEASE SHOULD, IN GENERAL, NOT RECEIVE BETA-BLOCKERS"; may mask hypoglycemia warning signs such as tachycardia; and "atenolol can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman."

Atenolol tablets are indicated for: - Treatment of hypertension, "to lower blood pressure" and reduce the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events such as strokes and myocardial infarctions - Long-term management of patients with angina pectoris - Management of hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction, "to reduce cardiovascular mortality."
