Uses and warnings

BOXED WARNING: "SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIORS" - antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in short-term studies in "children, adolescents, and young adults," and patients of all ages should be monitored for clinical worsening and suicidality, especially during the first few months of treatment and after dose changes. Bupropion is contraindicated in patients with a "seizure disorder," a "current or prior diagnosis of bulimia or anorexia nervosa," those undergoing abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or antiepileptic drugs, and in patients taking or within 14 days of an MAOI. Additional warnings cover dose-related seizure risk (maximum 450 mg/day), activation of mania/hypomania, elevated blood pressure, and psychosis/neuropsychiatric reactions.

Bupropion Hydrochloride Tablets are indicated for the "treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)." The label notes that a dose increase may be considered for patients with an inadequate response after an adequate trial, and the drug should be dosed in divided doses to minimize seizure risk, with no single dose exceeding 150 mg.
